Connect Austria awarded third GSM license

With Orange, consortium now includes four international mobile radiotelephone network operators

There are several advantages to Orange4s participation in Connect Austria. When the time comes to set up the third Austrian network, the consortium will be able to draw on the know-how of four mobile radiotelephone network operators with international experience. With the inclusion of Orange, the company press release goes on to state, one of the most successful mobile radiotelephone network marketers in Great Britain is assuming a leadership role in the third Austrian network. Besides Orange, the Connect Austria consortium includes the Norwegian company Telenor, Tele Danmark, and the German Viag Group.
Secretary Einem said: "I am pleased that we were able to wrap up this licensing procedure so quickly and successfully. It benefits Austrian tax payers by avoiding further delays and putting an end to a period of confusion. It also benefits Austrian telephone and mobile telephone customers because a productive third operator will ensure further improvement in service at even more affordable prices."
Einem went on to say that August 1, 1997 was an important day for telecommunications in Austria. "Today the Telecommunications Act takes effect and today I have granted the third license. Both were essential milestones in my political efforts on behalf of a modern communications infrastructure for Austria and, simultaneously, for jobs with a future in our country."
