ONE WLAN Roaming planned from 2004
Test stage with Excilan starts as of October
ONE has recently signed an agreement on a three-month testing stage for WLAN roaming with Excilan, a WLAN roaming broker. After the completion of tests, ONE post-paid customers will probably be able to use WLAN at more than 2,000 hotspots in 15 countries from the beginning of 2004. ONE WLAN Roaming is then activated directly at the hotspot via the “pay by mobile phone“-button at the access side of the local WLA operator and with the ONE handset. Costs of WLAN Roaming will be invoiced as usual with the monthly ONE service bill.
At the beginning of October, ONE starts with the internal testing stage with Excilan, a clearing and roaming broker with headquarters in Luxemburg, which currently has WLAN roaming agreements with six mobile telephony operators and numerous WISPs (Wireless Internet Service Provider). With regard to the former apart from ONE, SFR and Bouygues Telecom from France, O2 from Great Britain, Siminn from Iceland and Orange from Switzerland have access. Customers of Excilan partners have access to more than 2,000 hotspots in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Spain, the Czech Republic and Hungary. Christian Czech, CCO of ONE comments: “We will intensively test ONE WLAN Roaming for about three months. As soon as this test run hopefully has been completed successfully, our customers will already be able to use ONE WLAN also abroad at the beginning of 2004.“
This is how easy ONE WLAN will also work abroad
No matter whether ONE post-paid customers also wish to use WLAN both at home and abroad, the prerequisites are the same. They merely need to have ONE WLAN activated (either by phone by the ONE Service Team on 0699 70 699, in a ONE World or they activate it themselves in the ONE Cockpit at www.one.at), their WLAN-enabled device and their ONE mobile phones. As soon as ONE WLAN customers are abroad at an Excilan roaming partner hotspot in future and open the Internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) on their WLAN-enabled devices, the home page of the local WLAN provider will pop up automatically. On this page, the customer simply clicks on the button “pay by mobile phone“ and enters his phone number. Consequently, within seconds he gets a call on his ONE mobile phone. By means of the interactive pre-recorded menu in his native language the customer is informed about the current WLAN roaming costs, okays the activation of the handset by pressing a button and already he is online. The invoicing for WLAN use abroad then takes place as usual via the monthly ONE service bill.
