ONE UMTS launch will take place on 30 December
- Launch with substantially more than 25 % UMTS population coverage
- Launch in Vienna and numerous major cities and provincial capitals
- New Nokia 7600 first ONE UMTS-enabled handset
ONE will launch UMTS on 30 December 2003. With a population coverage of clearly more than 25 %, billing via the Best ONE Data tariff scheme and available UMTS-enabled handsets, licence conditions have been more than fulfilled. Population coverage is for instance available in Vienna, Graz, Klagenfurt, Innsbruck, Dornbirn , Eisenstadt and St. Pölten, further rollout for 2004 has already been embarked on. UMTS-enabled SIM cards and handsets with the corresponding tariff scheme will be available as of 30 December in selected ONE Worlds. Advertising will start as soon as enough UMTS-enabled devices are available.
“With substantially more than 25 % UMTS population coverage, 144 kbps bandwidth and available UMTS-enabled SIM cards and handsets, ONE will more than fulfil regulatory conditions per launch on 30 December,“ explains ONE CEO Jørgen Bang-Jensen. “Even though we have absolute faith in the third mobile telephony wave and believe that UMTS will take off in 2004, the launch would be too early at this point in time. As not enough functioning UMTS-enabled handsets meeting the quality expectations of our customers, a commercial campaign does not make sense at this point,“ critically Bang-Jensen says. “For this reason, sales-support measures will only be taken once a sufficient number of functioning UMTS-enabled handsets are available.“ Even though video telephony has been technically possible since the beginning of December, UMTS will initially be primarily used as a “turbo“ for existing ONE solutions such as the mobile ONE Portal or ONE Mobile Office.
For the UMTS launch billing of package-transmitted data connections takes place according to the Best ONE Data tariff scheme (formerly Best ONE GPRS) for € 0,- monthly fee, which always optimally adjusts to how much the customer consumes. Thus data volumes of up to 5 MB € 2.5 per MB, for data volumes up to 10 MB € 2,- per MB, for data volumes up to 20 MB € 1.5 per MB and for data volumes up to 20 MB € 1 per MB are charged. Registration for UMTS takes place via selected ONE Worlds, where customers can also acquire the UMTS-enabled SIM cards as well as the new UMTS-enabled Nokia 7600 for € 999,-.
