ONE Turns the Mobile Phone into a Sound Machine

ONE celebrates its sixth birthday with an innovation in Austria: As of October 26, 2004, all ONE UMTS customers can download, save and play pieces of music in full length on their cell phones. With the WAP data package, the download costs for pieces of music and all other services for UMTS cell phones at the ONE Smile Portal are clearly defined. We start exclusively with songs by Warner Music and monkey. For sampling purposes, some songs, such as the Vienna rock band “Julia”, are currently offered free of charge, all other downloads cost € 1.90/song.

According to the Austria Internet Monitoring (AIM) of the first quarter of 2004, only 19% of all Austrian households have mp3 players, and still only a limited number has plans to buy one. But some 80 percent of all Austrians own a cell phone. ONE concentrates on this penetration and turns the mobile phone into a music device. With the first Austrian offer for downloading entire pieces of music, ONE continues its focus on music, as started in 2004.

Most UMTS cell phones have enough memory for 50 to 100 songs. “We have recognized this trend and turn the mobile phone into a sound machine. ONE customers have the opportunity to download music always and everywhere – and thus have a virtual mp3 player with them in the form of their mobile phone. Life requires music in full length,” Jørgen Bang-Jensen, CEO of ONE, knows as the father of two teenage music enthusiasts.

The download of full-length pieces of music to the UMTS cell phone is exceedingly simple and done via SMS, WAP or the web at www.one.at. To make the search for a desired song easier, the music platform at www.one.at is structured according to types of music (for instance alternative, rock & pop, rhythm & blues). For sampling purposes, some songs, such as the Vienna rock band “Julia”, are currently offered free of charge, all other downloads cost € 1.90/song.

In addition to the price per music download, data transmission is charged according to the respective tariff schedule. UMTS customers automatically receive a WAP data package for € 5.- per month, which contains 20 MB for music downloads and the use of other services of the ONE Smile Portal.

Launch with 500 top hits

On October 26, 2004, ONE starts with an exclusive music offer of some 500 top hits by Warner Music. In addition, the music platform contains music titles by monkey (Austrian bands such as Julia, Homme Beige or Tanga), which are provided free to us and can of course also be downloaded free of charge by ONE customers. The music platform is extended continuously and is to be supplied by all great labels in the future. Negotiations with Universal, EMI, Sony and BMG are under way.
